Challenge

The premise of the project was to design and develop a digital signage image-recording device for the information, cultural and entertainment space BARBARA in Wrocław, as part of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016.

Equally vital idea was to conceive a fun meeting space, a seed for innovative thinking about the culture of the future against the backdrop of ever-changing city of Wrocław. Our main reflections revolved around transformation, diversity, spiritual values and spaces of profound experience.

Concept

From design to deployment, the objective was to live up to genius loci of this renowned site. The BARBARA – formerly a famous fast-food bar, operating there from the 60’s, over subsequent decades of its presence, meanwhile harboring a hippie hideaway in the 70’s and being a rally point for the ‘Orange Alternative’ movement in the 80’s – has forged an iconic status, woven into the fabric of local landscape, having witnessed many watershed moments for Wroclaw along the way.

Not only didn’t the latest installment of refurbished Barbara erase the traces of history but subtly brought them back to a collective memory. With modern interiors, furnished with works by contemporary Polish designers, one can still feel the atmosphere of the good old days.

And there, where bold idea met a fertile ground, a unique piece of design furniture and a utility totem pole was born.

Today, combining the functions of a space for cultural activities, a café and an information point, BARBARA is an excellent meeting place in the very heart of the city.
Our unique white monolith still remains a beacon of open doors for fun, creativity, art and passion flooding in from all walks of life.

We are extremely proud of this implementation and our part in contributing to the creation of this remarkable place.
